BROCCOLI MALLUM

Dear Lankan/Asian people, how much do you love to have some Jackfruit Mallum AKA Kos Mallum on your plate? Lots, right..? But what if you couldn’t find some Jackfruits..? Ever thought about any substitution? Well… let me introduce this Broccoli Mallum, flavour more similar to Jackfruit.

I got two heads of broccoli, bought couple of days ago to steam/roast. But I totally forgot to cook. As usual my weekend rice and curry has arrived. Night before was planning everything and thought I should make something with these broccoli. Around on Instagram, saw some were making Cauliflower Mallum. “Why don’t you do it with Broccoli” my mind was murmured.

Next morning when I was cooking, had a conversation with my mother. This is completely normal to us. Put my Bluetooth headset on and started my cooking and conversation with her. “Amma how do you cook Kos Mallum” then she explained me the process. The only thing  that I changed was Broccoli instead of Jackfruit.

Honestly the smell, feeling and the taste was so similar to Jackfruit Mallum. Try once and you cannot stop yourself falling in love with it.

1.i got one broccoli head. It was around 250g. Cut the florets into small pieces, peel the stem, halve it and cut into small dices. Wash well in a cold running water.

2.place the washed broccoli pieces in a bottom down pan/pot with 1/2cup of water. Cover with a lid and cook in medium heat about 5-7 minutes in medium heat.

3.meantime grind 1tsp mustard seeds into a fine powder. I used mortar and pestle.

4.into that add 1/2tsp ground black pepper, 2 garlic cloves, 1 green chilli, 1/2tsp turmeric powder and grind it well.

5.into that mixture add 3tbs freshly scraped coconut along with 1tbs water and grind again about 2 minutes.

6.mix the coconut mixture with salt on your taste, 2inch size cinnamon piece and some curry leaves.

7.keep eye on your broccoli. When there is about 2-3tbs of water left in broccoli add the coconut mixture to it. Mix until well coated.

8.cook more about 3-4 minutes in medium heat and fire off.
