As Sri Lankans we all know, eat this fish curry regularly. Apart from “Ambulthiyala” (sour fish curry) we carrying this recipe to preserve our fish for few more days.
The coastal area we live, our elders mainly and mostly goes with fresh tuna to make this curry. And sometimes with fresh anchovies or sardine fish. I got freshly caught tuna from fisherman. Actually he is my sister’s father in law who is engage in fishery industry here. As soon as I saw these wanted to cook some spicy fish curry. The flesh was super fresh and red, I cannot imagine anything else than Miris Maluwa when I saw it.
Seen some people cook this with touch of thick coconut milk but I grow up eating and watching this without coconut milk. For me and people in my area “Miris Malu” is something WITHOUT coconut milk. Completely cooked with water in medium to low heat heat until gravy become thick. Well, every recipe vary from people to people and region to region and this how we do. And the only spice I added here was “Chilli powder” because Miris Maluwa should be red and spicy, nothing else. And the chilli powder I use in my cuisine is combination of few more other spices and herbs what my mother makes for us. I have already shared it in my IG feed, if interesting check out my mother’s homemade chilli powder recipe.
One top secret, always serve this curry day after cooked. Re heat before consume and serve. Perfectly pairing with milky milk rice aka Kiribath, freshly baked roast pan or some white rice, freshly scraped coconut, creamy dal curry. And I’m drooling while I’m writing this… haaahh…!!!
